English
In English, we will be writing a set of instructions and looking at a range of poetry to learn and perform. We will also be looking at the different features of letters and invitations and will be having a go at writing some of our own.
Maths
In Year 1, we will be focusing on place value and addition and subtraction within 10. We will introduce the part part whole model and learn the number bonds to 10. We will also be learning about 2D and 3D shapes.
In Year 2, We will be learning to count objects to 100 by making groups of 10, recognising the amount of tens and ones in 2 digit numbers and write numbers to 100 in words. We will be looking at number bonds to 10, 20 and 100, adding and subtracting 2 digit numbers using apparatus and jottings and solving number problems.
Science
In Year 1, we will be labelling the human body and learning about our 5 senses. We will also learn about a variety of common animals including fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals and the structure of each. We will discuss animals that are carnivores, herbivores and omnivores.
In Year 2, we will be learning all about what animals and humans need to survive as well as the importance of exercise and eating a balanced diet. We will also be looking at animals and their offspring and how they grow into adults.
Art and Design
We will be studying the artist Van Gogh and creating our own self portraits. We will be looking at primary and how we can mix them to make secondary colours.
In Year 2, we will also be experimenting with black and white to create different shades and tones.
Computing
In Year 1 in Autumn 1, we will be learning how to explore and tinker with hardware to find out how it works. We will also be learning where keys are located on the keyboard.
In Year 1 in Autumn 2, we will be learning about how to create a simple algorithm. We will learn where the buttons, battery, wheels and on/off switch are on a beebot and how to make a beebot move.
In Year 2 in Autumn 1, we will be exploring what a computer is by identifying and learning how inputs and outputs work. Understanding how computers are used in the wider world and designing our own computerised invention.
In Year 2 in Autumn 2, we will be developing an understanding of what algorithms are, how to program them and how they can be developed to be more efficient through a range of unplugged and plugged-in activities.
Design and Technology
As part of our marvellous me topic and learning about healthy eating in science, we will be following a recipe to make some fruit buns in DT. We can’t wait to get messy baking!
Geography
In Year 1, we will be looking at cities, towns and villages and identifying features of each.
In Year 2, we will be studying the exciting country of Australia and comparing life in an Australian town with life in England. We will be looking at advantages and disadvantages of living in a town or city.
History
In Year 1, we will study the impact Florence Nightingale had on hospitals. In Year 2, we will focus on how Mary Seacole helped the lives of many soldiers fighting in the Crimean war and how her and Florence Nightingale are linked.
PE
In Autumn 1 we will be studying the topic team building. We will be applying teamwork skills in pairs and as part of a group. We will learn what makes an effective team and have lots of fun taking part in different challenges.
In Autumn 2 we will be studying the topic gymnastics. We will learn to link movements and balances together to create a sequence. We will be challenging ourselves by trying out balances and travelling in different ways on the floor and on apparatus.
Music
In music, we will be learning the difference between pulse and rhythm. We will be describing the character, mood, or ‘story’ of the music they listen to and learning how to repeat short, simple rhythmic patterns.
Health and Relationships
In Year 1, we will be learning about different feelings and how they might make me behave. We will know ways of dealing with 'not so good' feelings and how to help others. We will talk about trusted adults they have at home and/or school and who to ask to manage their feelings and relationships.
In Year 2, we will be looking at our feelings and how we can express them in different ways including expressing feelings in a safe and controlled way. We will look at the term bullying and what it means. We will know what to do if we experience bullying. We will be looking at what makes a good friend and know what we do to be a good friend.
We will look at the similarities and differences between ourselves and others and will be respectful of these differences. We will know why it is important to show good listening and what to do if someone feels left out.
RE
In Year 1, we are learning about annual or weekly celebrations for Christians and Jewish people, including Christmas, Easter, Hanukkah and Shabbat. We will also learn songs, worship, stories, artefacts and food in festivals and celebrations from other faiths.
In Year 2, we will be studying different leaders that are important to us such as coaches, teachers, family members etc. We will also look at the importance of Moses as a leader in Judaism and the importance of Saint Peter and Jesus as leaders for Christians. We will identify features which make a good leader.
We will learn about Jewish people’s ideas about God and the creation story. We will study Shabbat and know some ways a Rabbi teaches the community about God.
