Autumn

English

In English, we will be taking part in curious quests to experience a range of stories, videos and traditional tales. We will be recapping sentence writing, ensuring we use capital letters, finger spaces and full stops and looking at text types such as recipes and instructions.

Maths

In Year 2, we will be investigating numbers to 100, using < > and = to compare numbers, we will estimate on number lines and fill in missing numbers. We will be adding and subtracting 2 digit numbers and looking at 2D and 3D shapes. We will answer a range of problem solving and reasoning questions.

Science

We will be learning all about what animals and humans need to survive as well as the importance of exercise and eating a balanced diet. We will also be looking at animals and their offspring and how they grow into adults. 

Art and Design

We will be studying the artist Van Gogh and creating our own paintings based on his artwork Starry Night. We will be looking at primary colours and how we can mix them to make secondary colours. We will also be experimenting with black and white to create different shades and tones. We will also be looking at how to join materials together by sewing.

Computing

In computing we will be looking at different types of technology and learning how to be safe online. We will learn how to type using a laptop and what a digital footprint is.

Design and Technology

In DT, we will be focusing on our cooking skills. We will be learning to prepare different healthy dishes and follow recipes to create a snack or treat.

Geography

In geography we will be focusing on our fieldwork skills by looking at compass directions and identifying human and physical features of our environment. We will be creating our own maps and looking at a range of atlases, globes and maps.  

History

We will be learning all about toys from the past. We will compare toys we play with, toys from our grandparents era and Victorian toys.

PE

In Autumn 1 we will be studying the topic team building. We will be applying teamwork skills in pairs and as part of a group. We will learn what makes an effective team and have lots of fun taking part in different challenges.

 In Autumn 2 we will be studying the topic gymnastics. We will learn to link movements and balances together to create a sequence. We will be challenging ourselves by trying out balances and travelling in different ways on the floor and on apparatus. 

Music

In music the children will learn about the differences between pulse, rhythm and pitch and to learn how to rap and enjoy it in its original form.

Health and Relationships

We will be looking at our feelings and how we can express them in different ways including expressing feelings in a safe and controlled way. We will look at the term bullying and what it means. We will know what to do if we experience bullying. We will be looking at what makes a good friend and know what we do to be a good friend.

We will look at the similarities and differences between ourselves and others and will be respectful of these differences. We will know why it is important to show good listening and what to do if someone feels left out. 

RE

We will be studying different leaders that are important to us such as coaches, teachers, family members etc. We will also look at the importance of Moses as a leader in Judaism and the importance of Saint Peter and Jesus as leaders for Christians. We will identify features which make a good leader.
