Nettleworth Infant School and Nursery

Our Curriculum Vision

Intent ~ Implement ~ Impact

At Nettleworth Infant and Nursery School, our aim We Nurture, We Flourish, We Achieveis central to everything we do to enable our children to SHINE like stars. In practice this involves focusing on our children being SAFE, HAPPY and INDEPENDENT learners. We NURTURE resilience and ignite curiosity by delivering an inspiring curriculum and promoting a love of learning. We strive to equip all of our children with the confidence to have big ambitions and high expectations of themselves as they strive for EXCELLENCE.

We are an outward looking school, with a strong sense of community and we aim to create a curriculum that truly meets the needs of our children. It is our children’s voices that we want to drive and shape the curriculum. One that is rich, exciting and broad and balanced and has reading at the heart and will enable each individual child to develop academically, emotionally, creatively, socially and physically.

Our curriculum encourages our children to share ideas, express their opinions and apply knowledge and skills learned in a wide range of meaningful contexts. It offers opportunities for our children to investigate, question, debate and challenge and enables our children to flourish and to be the very best they can be.

Each term our children embark on a learning journey theme based on meaningful, motivating and memorable first-hand learning experiences. These offer a language rich curriculum that is ambitious, purposeful and responsive to children’s interests and to feedback from parent/carers.

Our learning journey themes are coherently and cumulatively planned and sequenced to ensure all children acquire the skills, knowledge and understanding essential to making progress and succeeding in their learning. We recognise that progress means knowing more and remembering more, thus we ensure many opportunities for recall and fluency are built into our curriculum so that learning is embedded into children’s long term memory. Our daily mantra ‘Practice makes progress. Practice makes permanent’ is based on this principle.

A whole school consistent approach to our Rainbow Rules, PSHE lessons and assemblies promote excellent behaviour and positive attitudes to learning. As our children progress through the school, they develop the confidence and ability to work independently and collaboratively. A ‘can do’ growth mind-set ethos permeates learning across school, where risk taking and mistakes are valued as part of the learning process alongside the notion of ‘I can’t do it YET.’

We systematically teach key learning behaviours through our four superhero learning characters (based on the work of Guy Claxton and COEL). These enable our children to become aware of themselves as learners and to develop perseverance, resilience and creativity and embed collaborative working. Teamwork and responsibility are an essential part of our curriculum and children take on key roles and responsibilities essential to our school day, learning new skills and enabling them to take an active part throughout the year.

We strive to ensure that our children leave our school feeling proud of their achievements and they have developed the confidence and skills essential to develop a life-long love for learning and to be the best they can be.

Every child an active participant on a learning journey
