Spring Term

Our Spring Term Topic is ‘Healthy Humans’

 

English

In English we will be learning how to write a recount about previous events and experiences following the Christmas break.  We will then be learning about non-chronological reports looking at the key features, genre and layout.  Using the knowledge we gain through our history topic, the children will then be able to write a non-chronological report and fact files about Florence Nightingale and Mary Seacole.

After the February break, the children will be focusing on traditional tales, using story maps and ‘Talk 4 Writing’ to retell them.  The children will also be learning and performing poetry inspired by Julia Donaldson.

Maths

In maths we will be focusing on: place value within 20, addition and subtraction within 20, place value within 50, length and height and mass and volume.

By the end of the place value units, children will be able to:

  • Count to and across 50, forwards and backwards, beginning with 0 or 1, or from any given number
  • Count, read and write numbers to 50 in numerals; count in multiples of twos, fives and tens given a number, identify one more and one less
  • Identify and represent numbers using objects and pictorial representations including the number line, and use the language of: equal to, more than, less than (fewer), most, least
  • Read and write numbers from 1 to 50 in numerals and words.
  • Solve problems involving addition and subtraction

 

By the end of the measurements units, children will be able to:

  • Compare, describe and solve practical problems for length and height and mass and capacity
  • Measure and begin to record

 

Science

As part of our ‘Healthy Humans’ topic, the children will be learning about animals (including humans) and plants during this term.

By the end of this unit children will:

•           know, draw and label the basic parts of the human body and say which part of the body is associated with each sense. 

•           know the name of a variety of common wild and garden plants, including deciduous and evergreen trees.

•           know the basic structure of common flowering plants, including trees.

The children will engage in numerous science enquiries to name a variety of common wild and garden plants, including deciduous and evergreen trees and demonstrate their knowledge on the basic structure of common flowering plants, including trees. They will use their senses to identify by taste or smell and make observations of leaves, seeds, flowers comparing two leaves, seeds, or flowers.

Seasonal Changes

The children will take part in investigations throughout the year regarding seasonal changes.

By the end of this year, children will:

  • know some changes across the four seasons.
  • know the weather associated with the seasons and how day length varies.
  • compare and contrast information that has been collected about the weather regularly throughout the year.
  • set up a test to see which materials keep things the driest, know if the test has been successful and say what has been learned
  • explain to someone what has been learned from an investigation they have been involved with and draw conclusions from the questions asked
  • use measures in a test to find something out

History

The children will be learning about the lives of significant individuals in the past who have contributed to national and international achievements, namely Florence Nightingale and Mary Seacole.

They will engage in investigating changes within living memory and where appropriate, these should be used to reveal aspects of change in national life.

By the end of this term, the children will be able to:      

•           Say why people may have acted the way they did

•           Use information to describe the past

•           Recount the main events from a significant event in history

•           Recall some facts about people/events before living memory

•           Describe some simple similarities and differences

 

Art

During this term, the children will learn to develop a wide range of art and design techniques in using colour, pattern, texture, line, shape, form and space.

By the end of this unit of work the children will:

•           know the names of the primary and secondary colours.

•           know how to create a repeating pattern in print

•           Know how to produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences

•           know how to be proficient in drawing and painting

•           know how to evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design

 

Music - Classic music, dynamics and tempo

Children will use their bodies and instruments to listen and respond to pieces of classical music that represent animals. They will learn and perform a song as a class and compose a short section of music as a group, with a focus on dynamics and tempo.

By the end of this unit, children will be able to;

  • Observe others and try to play appropriately.
  • Sing in time from memory, with some accuracy.
  • Play either a call and/or a response role in time with another pupil.
  • Keep a steady pulse.
  • Improvise, using their instrument, to a given stimulus.

 

PE

Dance

Children will know about changes of direction, level & speed, repeat and perform sequences and display development in the fundamentals of movement – Jog, Jump, Hop, Weight on Hands & Balance.

Striking and Fielding

Children will know how to throw and catch displaying a degree of competency, in isolation and in varied environments. They will use fundamentals of movement to achieve success in competitive environments, individually and as a team, with guidance participate displaying respect, fair play and working well with others.    

 

RE – Myself and caring for others / Beliefs and teachings

Myself and caring for others

By the end of this unit children will know they have a uniqueness as a person in a family and community, know examples of caring for others and exploring characteristics such as goodness, kindness, generosity, sharing and to know religious stories and teachings, e.g. Jesus’ story of the Lost Sheep, the Jewish Psalm 23 and infer ideas about care from these texts.

Beliefs and teachings

By the end of this unit children will know some stories of Jesus, e.g. Healing the Ten Lepers, Calming the Storm on Lake Galilee, Feeding the 5000, to know some stories Jesus told, e.g. The Lost Coin, the Lost Son and to know that these stories matter to Christians because of who they believe Jesus was.

 

Health and Relationships

Caring and Responsibility

This topic focuses on special people. It explores why they are special and how they care for and keep one another safe. It examines pupils’ increasing responsibilities towards themselves and others as they get older, including the role they can play and the difference they can make within their communities.

By the end of this unit, children will know:         

  • Their special people.
  • How our special people care for us.
  • About keeping safe.

 

Keeping Safe

This topic supports children to understand how our feelings can keep us safe, how to keep healthy and the boundaries surrounding medicine safety.

By the end of this unit, children will know:         

  • How to say what they can do if they have strong, but not so good feelings, to help them stay safe (e.g. sad - talk to someone).
  • How to give examples of how they keep themselves healthy.
  • When medicines might be harmful.
